How it works

This tally counter keeps a single running total. Press + to add the step size, − to subtract it. The step size defaults to 1, but you can set it to anything — count by 5s during inventory, by 0.5s, whatever your task needs.

  • Keyboard shortcuts: ↑ (Arrow Up) or Space adds, ↓ (Arrow Down) subtracts — handy when your hands are busy and the counter is on screen.
  • Goal + progress bar: enter a target (say 100 push-ups) and a progress bar fills as you count. Hit the goal and you’ll get a celebration.
  • Undo last: removes your most recent press from the count, stats, and history.
  • Click sounds: a soft tick confirms every press, with a lower tone for subtraction. Toggle it off any time.
  • Label: name your counter (“Laps”, “Customers today”, “Stitches”) so the heading always shows what you’re counting.

The count lives only in this page — refreshing resets it. (A deliberate choice: no accounts, no tracking, nothing stored.)

Common questions

Free Online Tally Counter with Goals and Keyboard Shortcuts

Counting things by hand is how mistakes happen — you lose track, someone interrupts you, and suddenly you’re not sure whether that was 47 or 48. An online tally counter fixes it: one big number on screen, a giant + button to tap for each item, and nothing to install or sign up for.

This free tally counter goes beyond the basics. Use step presets (1, 5, 10, 25) or a custom step to count by 5s or 10s, add an optional goal with a live progress bar (and a small celebration when you hit it), name your counter, undo mistaken presses, review your last 10 counts in the history panel, and use keyboard shortcuts so you can count without even looking at the screen. A soft click sound confirms every press.

What People Use Tally Counters For

  • Inventory and stock counts — count items on shelves, boxes in a warehouse, or parts on a line.
  • Fitness — reps, laps, push-ups, or steps walked.
  • Events — attendees through the door, tickets scanned, hands raised.
  • Classrooms and labs — observations, survey responses, behavior counts.
  • Crafts — stitches, rows, or beads.
  • Games and sports — scores, pitches, or laps.

Anywhere you’d make tick marks on paper, a tally counter is faster and can’t be misread.

How to Use It

  1. Name it (optional). Type a label like “Push-ups” or “Boxes counted” so the heading shows what you’re tracking.
  2. Press + for each item. Click or tap the big green button — or press ↑ (Arrow Up) or Spacebar on your keyboard.
  3. Fix mistakes with −. The red button (or ↓ Arrow Down) subtracts one step.
  4. Set a step size. Tap a preset (1, 5, 10, 25) or type a custom value. Counting cartons of 12? Set the step to 12 and each press adds a dozen.
  5. Add a goal. Enter a target like 100 and watch the progress bar fill. Hit it and you’ll get a celebration.
  6. Reset when you start a new count.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Key Action
↑ Arrow Up or Space Add one step
↓ Arrow Down Subtract one step

Shortcuts are ignored while you’re typing in the label, step, or goal fields, so you can’t accidentally change the count mid-edit. The Space shortcut also won’t scroll the page while the counter is focused.

Worked Example: Warehouse Inventory

You’re counting cartons, and each carton holds 6 units. Set the step size to 6, label the counter “Cartons — Aisle 3”, and set a goal of 480 units (80 cartons). Tap + for each carton you pass: the display climbs 6, 12, 18… and the progress bar fills toward 480. At 80 taps the celebration fires — count complete, no mental math, no tick marks to add up later.

Tips for Accurate Counting

  • Use the keyboard when your eyes are busy. If you’re watching items go by on a belt, keep a finger on the Spacebar and your eyes on the work.
  • Count in steps that match reality. Items come in packs of 5? Count by 5s and let the counter do the multiplication.
  • Set the goal before you start. A visible target keeps you honest about how far along you are.
  • Subtract freely. Miscounts happen — the − button exists so one slip doesn’t ruin the total. It’s faster to fix immediately than to recount later.
  • One counter, one job. If you’re tracking two things, open the page in two tabs rather than mixing counts.
